After your O/L: A/L subjects, university and jobs
What to choose, how university entrance works, and where IT can take you. About five minutes to read.
A/L streams
You pick a stream, then three subjects in it. ICT can be one of the three in four of the five streams.
Subject rules can change. Confirm the combination with your school before you decide.
How university entrance works
- Sit three A/L subjectsYou also need to pass the Common General Test.
- Your results become a Z-scoreIt lets marks from different subjects be compared fairly. Higher is better.
- Apply to the UGCYou list the degree programmes you want, in order.
- Places go by Z-scoreMost places are shared out by district, so you compete mainly within your district.
IT degrees you can aim for
Not only state universities: private degrees and professional routes like BCS also lead into IT. Official details: UGC admissions handbook

Manitha AbeysiriwardanaContent CreatorYouTube · ManiYaWhy choose ICT for A/L
ICT is one of the highest-scoring A/L subjects, and you can take it in the Science, Commerce, Arts and Technology streams. Our own students have reached Z-scores of 2.7 and 2.9 with Maths, Physics & ICT.
Programming, databases, networking and system design lead to software engineering, data science, cyber security and AI — and Sri Lanka’s fast-growing IT & BPM industry.
O/L ICT already taught you the core logic — A/L ICT builds straight on top of it, with our rankers’ track record to guide you the rest of the way.
Every one of those systems has to be built, run, secured and supported by someone. Whatever field you choose, A/L ICT puts you on the side of the people who build and run those systems — not the side being replaced by them.
